I believe the future of blockchain-based applications is in tightly coupling abstracted layers into applications that solve real business issues. I have found that Hyperledger, like Apache, is the best place to abstract these layers into stand-alone functions that allow programmers to build the best code for their particular application. A great commercial blockchain is one that combines these tightly-defined, highly-scalable functions together to solve real business issues.

Venkatraman Ramakrishna is an IBM Researcher with 10 years of experience. Following a B. Tech. from IIT Kharagpur and a PhD from UCLA, he worked in the Bing Infrastructure team in Microsoft, building reliable application deployment software. At IBM Research, he worked in mobile computing and security before joining the Blockchain team. He has developed applications for trade and regulation, and is now working on improving the performance and privacy-preserving characteristics of the Hyperledger platform. Anthony O'Dowd is a technical leader in IBM's Blockchain team. Anthony is based in Europe as part of a worldwide team that help users build business solutions which benefit from Blockchain technology. Anthony has a background in middle and back office systems, and has led the development of key IBM middleware in enterprise messaging and integration. He likes to work with different industry users to understand how they can exploit middleware to build more efficient, integrated business systems. Salman A. Baset is currently working as CTO Security, IBM Blockchain Solutions. He oversees the security and compliance of blockchain solutions being built by IBM in collaboration with partners such as Walmart and Maersk, and interfaces with clients on blockchain solutions and their security. He drives the implementation of General Data Protection Regulation for blockchain-based solutions. Moreover, he has also built the identity management system which is being used by Fortune 500 companies involved in Global Trade Digitization and Food Trust blockchain solutions.

Blockchain technologies have recently emerged with tremendous momentum based on the success of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency [8]. Blockchain uses a distributed ledger to provide a shared, immutable, and transparent history of all the actions that have happened to all the participants of the network. It enables a new generation of transactional applications that establish trust, accountability, and transparency. Blockchain, in particular permissioned blockchain technology, makes it possible for a user to have complete control of data and privacy without a central point of control; thus, it is highly cost-effective and efficient for building applications for sharing EHR data [9-15].
Figure 2 shows the one-organization settings: The EHR blockchain network is formed by a cloud server, MS, orderer, and peer nodes (health care institutions; Figure 2). Every hospital participating in the network needs to deploy a server running a Hyperledger Fabric v1.4 peer, interfacing an EHR database (for testing, a simulated EHR database using MySQL was used per peer), an instance of CouchDB for on-chain metadata management, and a web application to interact with the chaincode and EHR. 59ce067264
