The present invention relates to an auto-tensioner for use in a seat belt system for a vehicle, and more particularly, it relates to an improvement in a tensioner base plate for an auto-tensioner.

2. Description of the Related Art

A seat belt apparatus is provided with an auto-tensioner which automatically tightens a webbing by use of a torsion spring (referred to as a “tensioner” hereinafter). Specifically, when a vehicle occupant tightens the webbing to fasten himself/herself to a vehicle seat, the webbing is automatically tightened by the auto-tensioner.

A conventional auto-tensioner is disclosed, for example, in Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publication No. H11-171357. This auto-tensioner includes a tensioner base plate, a torsion spring and a slider. The torsion spring is attached to the tensioner base plate. The slider is disposed so as to be capable of sliding along the tensioner base plate. The slider is made of a resin material, and is provided with a cover portion which covers a winding portion of the torsion spring. In this auto-tensioner, when the vehicle occupant loosens the webbing, the slider is pressed against the tensioner base plate by the webbing, thereby reducing the degree of friction between the tensioner base plate and the slider.

Here, the torsion spring is of a construction in which at least one end is wound around a winding shaft which is rotatably supported by a frame (refer to, for example, Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publication No. 2005-054832). When this torsion spring is wound around the winding shaft with rotation of the winding shaft, some force acts upon the winding portion of the torsion spring in the direction of reducing the diameter of the winding portion, thereby urging the slider in the direction of reducing the degree of friction between the tensioner base plate and the slider. 827ec27edc
