\"We go into space because whatever mankind must undertake, free men must fully share...I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.\" --\"Special Message to the Congress on Urgent National Needs (205),\" May 25, 1961, Public Papers of the Presidents: John F. Kennedy, 1961. \"This nation has tossed its cap over the wall of space, and we have no choice but to follow it.\" --\"Remarks in San Antonio at the Dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center (472),\" November 21, 1963, Public Papers of the Presidents: John F. Kennedy, 1963. (The original anecdote from which Kennedy derived this comparison is in Frank O'Connor, An Only Child, London: MacMillan & Co. Ltd., 1961, p. 180.)
\"I hope that all of you who are students here will recognize the great opportunity that lies before you in this decade, and in the decades to come, to be of service to our country. The Greeks once defined happiness as full use of your powers along lines of excellence, and I can assure you that there is no area of life where you will have an opportunity to use whatever powers you have, and to use them along more excellent lines, bringing ultimately, I think, happiness to you and those whom you serve.\" --\"Address at the University of Wyoming (381),\" September 25, 1963, Public Papers of the Presidents: John F. Kennedy, 1963.
Originally entitled Light & Darkness, the album was set to be released in September 2009.[74] In an interview for the February 2010 issue of Marie Claire, Aguilera announced that the project was entitled Bionic and would be made available in March 2010.[75] However, on March 25 of that year, Aguilera re-confirmed that the album would be released on June 8.[76] In May of that year, the fan edition of the project was made available for pre-order via Sony Music Entertainment. The release included exclusive features, including a 12-inch 12-inch box, a triple vinyl set, a deluxe edition CD of Bionic, and two exclusive photographs of Aguilera.[77] On June 4, 2010, Bionic was released for CD and digital download in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain.[78][79][80] In the United States and Canada, the album was released on June 8.[81]
Billboard described the album as the \"best mainstream pop album of the year thus far\" upon its release.[115][119] Conversely, Entertainment Weekly later named Bionic the fifth worst album of 2010 in a year-end list.[120]
While reviewing Aguilera's eighth studio album Liberation in June 2018, Pitchfork writer Claire Lobenfield retrospectively hailed Bionic as a record with \"cutting-edge singles\" that was \"perhaps too forward-thinking, a risk that could have reaped the rewards of poptimism if the album had only been released a few years later.\"[123] The following October, Joey Guerra of Houston Chronicle echoed these statements regarding the progressive nature of the album, calling Bionic \"a forward-thinking assertion of independence like Madonna's Erotica and Janet Jackson's The Velvet Rope.\"[124]
The album ranked as the year's seventy-sixth best-selling album in the United States.[138] On the week ending June 26, 2010, Bionic debuted at its peak position, number three, on the Canadian Albums Chart.[139] The following week, it charted at number nine.[140] In the United Kingdom, Bionic debuted atop the UK Albums Chart, becoming Aguilera's second consecutive studio album to debut atop the chart[141] with 24,000 copies sold. It became the lowest-selling UK Albums Chart number-one album in eight years[142] but the record was later broken by Marina and the Diamonds and Newton Faulkner in 2012.[143] However, in the album's second week on the chart, it made the UK Albums Chart history when, on June 20, it registered the largest drop in chart history for a number one album by falling twenty-eight places to number twenty-nine, selling 9,754 copies that week.[144] This was beat by The Vamps in 2017, when their album Night & Day fell thirty-four places from number one to number thirty-five. Bionic has been certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
The first diesel ECM was wildly popular with consumers due to its ease of use and updates in real time to the driver. Functions in the DDEC system included engine diagnostic functions, shutdown timers, progressive shift functions, fault history and record keeping, speed limiting governors, cruise control and automatic stall preventing. The cruise control technology was particularly popular with fleet managers due to its fuel-saving function but most notably DDEC system allowed the operator to download engine management reports regarding use of the engine, provide record of over-speeding, excessive idle time, hard breaking and other parameters. The DDEC allowed dealers to change the horsepower settings and in some cases propriety software was able to be loaded into the computer. The system was easy to operate and diagnostic codes were displayed to the driver in real time: red indicator lights signaled a major problem while a yellow light was less of a serious issue. Detroit Diesel did not invent the modern day ECM but rather adapted General Motors ECM technology from the early 1980s into diesel technology. The first ECM was created by BMW in 1939 for the Kommandogerat airplane during WWII. The DDEC boom set in motion the electronic era for diesel engines. 1e1e36bf2d
