Highways and expressways provide support for the local, regional, and national transportation of services and goods. Moreover, they are indispensable to economic activities as modern lifestyle would be impossible without them. Activities related to work, education, shopping, tourism, and social are generating a demand for trips. Furthermore, the presence of toll plazas at expressways slows down traffic, thus creating traffic congestion during rush hour. Malaysian toll plazas are considered conventional toll collection, which is manual and the most common toll collection method. Manual toll collection is usually the cause of congestion related to the delay experienced by drivers, toll collection procedure, and operators at the manual toll lanes. This paper aims to examine the effect of the percentage of heavy vehicles on the performance of toll plazas in terms of the queue length using the microscopic traffic simulation model called VISSIM. The findings indicate that the percentage of heavy vehicles in traffic flow significantly affects queue lengths at toll plazas.
Descriptions of each bundle and the applications in each bundle are found at the DMA program website. Application prototypes were developed and tested by prototype developer contractors, while independent evaluation contractors evaluated the potential costs and benefits of the applications in each bundle. Often evaluation contractors used simulation software to contribute to the evaluation (see Estimated Benefits Reports).
The Open Source Application Data Portal (OSADP) is an open source repository of code for connected vehicle applications. Releases on the OSADP are freely available to all registered users. The computer code for each DMA prototype application, and input parameters and custom code for each DMA evaluation simulation, were submitted to the OSADP so that other CV researchers and deployers may take advantage of the developed code. The CV Pilot sites benefited greatly from the ability to obtain working prototypes of applications directly from the OSADP. The ability to download these applications meant that the sites did not need to develop the software entirely on their own.
Figure 1 illustrates the number of downloads by domain for each DMA application, grouped by DMA bundle (MMITSS, INFLO, FRATIS, R.E.S.C.U.M.E., and IDTO). The highest number of downloads was for the VISSIM traffic simulation code for Coordinated Adaptive Cruise Control. The next highest number of downloads was for the MMITTS algorithms. Each bundle had at least one release that was downloaded over 15 times. These download numbers indicate that the research community is taking advantage of the software provided by USDOT via the OSADP.
Comments we often receive regarding our use of PTV Vistro in comparison to Synchro/SimTraffic are in regard to micro-simulation. Specifically, Synchro/SimTraffic is purchased as one software package while VISSIM, which is the SimTraffic equivalent for Synchro, is a separate software from PTV. In these situations, we need to step back and first determine whether a micro-simulation is necessary at all.
In contrast, stochastic software is a micro-simulation. Geometry and volume are still inputs along with information regarding vehicle and driver behavior theories. The software simulates the coded transportation network, measuring the performance of individual vehicles as they move through the system. These vehicles can be influenced by other vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles, roadway grades and curves, and many other factors. Since individual vehicles will react differently to these inputs, the results of two simulations will not necessarily match. In other words, multiple answers to one given set of conditions. The advantages of micro-simulations are the power of visually showing operations along with the showing the impacts of surrounding congestion and system-wide results. VISSIM, SimTraffic, CORSIM, and Paramics are all examples of this type of software.
Practically speaking, engineering judgment should always be used on deciding which software or methodology is appropriate for your situation. We believe deterministic software based on the HCM, like Vistro, can be and should be used more. In fact, we complete 85 to 90 percent of our projects without micro-simulation. Given its advantages in other areas, detailed in our other articles here, starting with Vistro is a no-brainer in our view. When your studies get larger and more complicated, then you can add VISSIM to provide micro-simulation.
VisSim is an excellent software which provides the users to work with simulated areas based on the real-life maps or create the new projects to generate the simulated patterns of road traffic to plan. You can also modify or change the transport schemes as well as change the priorities in it. You can also download NetSIm Network Simulator.
There is an option to create reports on possible optimization of infrastructure, 2D and 3D visualization options. It is a free software and it can be downloaded very easily as it is secure. It is a superb traffic pattern simulation tool which can be used in analyzing public transport priority schemes. You can easily switch between the 2D and 3D visualizations and perspectives. It has been developed by the expert developers and it has been one of the most used software in this category.
